An Evolution item is an item that allows certain Pokémon to evolve. Depending on the Pokémon and the item, the Pokémon may need to hold the item, or the item may be able to be used directly.
Regardless of method, if a Pokémon evolves using one of these items, it consumes the item.

Others[]
The Sun Shard and Moon Shard in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness cause an Eevee with high friendship to evolve when it levels up while one of these items is in the Bag. They are the only Evolution items to be Key Items.
Having 999 Gimmighoul Coins in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet causes Gimmighoul to evolve into Gholdengo when it levels up, after which the coins are consumed. Despite being categorized as a TM Material, the Gimmighoul Coin is not actually used to make any TMs.
Mechanics[]
The way to use an Evolution item to evolve a Pokémon depends on the item. There are three distinct ways to use an Evolution item:
- Evolution-inducing held items: These Evolution items cause a Pokémon to evolve when it meets certain conditions while holding the item, such as leveling up or being traded.
- Directly-used Evolution items: These Evolution items cause a Pokémon to evolve when used on it from the Bag. They cannot be used in battle. Evolution stones are the most common example.
- The Sun Shard and Moon Shard: These Evolution items cause a Pokémon to evolve when it levels up while one of these items is in the Bag. They are the only Evolution items to be Key Items.
Regardless of the method by which it is used, if an Evolution item causes a Pokémon to evolve, that item is consumed.
